Customize survey terminology

Unlocking valuable insights from your engagement surveys starts with speaking your organization's language. While 15Five engagement surveys come equipped with default terms, we recognize that every workplace has its unique terminology. To ensure your surveys resonate with your team, we offer you the flexibility to tailor these crucial terms to match the language you use within your organization. In this article, we'll take you step-by-step through the process of customizing survey terminology, empowering you to create surveys that truly reflect your organization's identity and culture.

Manage survey terminology settings

Note

Managing survey terminology is one step in configuring the Engagement feature for your organization. Please refer to our "Configure Engagement feature settings" article for steps on how to configure additional settings.

  1. Click on Engagement in 15Five's main, left-hand navigation.

  2. [HR admins only] You'll land on the Engagement Overview page in 15Five. From here, click Go to Engage to open the Engage Portal.

  3. Click on the Settings gear in the top, right-hand corner of the Engage Portal and select 'Settings' from the dropdown menu.

  4. You're now on your company's Engagement feature settings page. From here, click on the "Organization settings" tab.

  5. Click the arrow to the right of "Survey Terminology" to open settings.

  6. In this section, you can replace the default language 15Five uses in engagement surveys with custom terms that will appear for survey participants. Terms you can replace are:

    • organization
    • leaders
    • coworkers
    • work group
    • manager
    • employees
  7. Click Expand below a term to see examples of how it appears in engagement surveys.

Note

Using different terminology will likely change the meaning of some survey statements, so you may see unexpected score shifts. For example, if you change the term "manager" to "immediate supervisor," employees may respond differently to those questions than they did on previous surveys. The results will be more accurate and more actionable because the terms are clear to employees but will take one survey to see those changes balance out in results.


Survey statement examples

To help you determine the right terms for your survey, we've included the survey statements associated with each substitution option below. Survey word: organization

Associated survey statements:

  • I have a good idea of what this {organization} is trying to accomplish.
  • I have opportunities to increase my influence in the {organization}.
  • I know why this {organization} exists.
  • I understand how my role fits into the purpose of the {organization}.
  • Overall I feel this {organization} is just and fair in the way it treats and rewards employees.
  • There is a great support system at this {organization} that helps me achieve my work goals.
Survey word: leaders

Associated survey statements:

  • The {leaders} in this organization follow through with what they say they are going to do.
  • The {leaders} of this organization are often connecting with people at work.
Survey word: coworkers

Associated survey statements:

  • My {coworkers} value my input.
  • I have shared work values with my {coworkers}.
Survey word: work group

Associated survey statement:

  • I feel a shared sense of purpose with my {work group}.
Survey word: manager

Associated survey statements:

  • My {manager} treats me fairly in the way they interact with me.
  • My {manager} helps me develop confidence in my own ability to do my job well.
Survey word: employees

Associated survey statements:

  • Overall I feel this organization is just and fair in the way it treats and rewards {employees}.
  • The leaders of this organization make themselves available for the {employees}.
