In 15Five, attributes help you organize and analyze engagement results by grouping employees based on key data points. There are three types of attributes you can assign: default, demographic, and custom. This article explains how each attribute type works and how to manage them to support engagement reporting.

Default Attributes 🛠️

Default attributes are standard employee data fields automatically recognized by 15Five. Once populated, they enable important groupings in engagement campaign results without any additional configuration.

Hire Date

The Hire date attribute reflects when an employee was hired at your organization. In Engagement feature reporting, this attribute is used to automatically create and update:

  • Tenure Groups: Categorize employees based on how long they've been with the organization. These groups update automatically as tenure increases.
  • Hire Cohort Groups: Group employees by original start date. These remain fixed over time, allowing you to track engagement by onboarding cohort.

Manager

The Manager attribute identifies each employee’s direct manager.. In Engagement feature reporting, this attribute is used to create:

  • Manager Groups: Group direct reports under each active manager.
  • Hierarchy Groups: Include both direct and indirect (downstream) reports, helping you analyze engagement based on leadership structure and manager impact.

How to Populate Default Attributes

You can manage/populate these default attributes using your HRIS (the recommended & easiest option), bulk import CSV, or one-off from employee account settings.

💡

Tip

To audit or update default attributes, go to the bulk import page and click Download current structure. The reviewer_email column shows each employee's manager. The hire_date column shows the employee's start date. Make any necessary changes in the CSV and re-upload it to ensure accuracy.

Demographic Attributes 🌎

Demographic attributes allow HR teams to segment engagement results by identity-related characteristics: age, gender, ethnicity, and race. These attributes are especially useful for DEI analysis and allow you to identify patterns and disparities in engagement across different identity groups.

✏️

Note

Only HR Admins and the employee can view their demographic attributes.

Custom Attributes 🧩

Custom attributes give you the flexibility to capture organization-specific details, such as job level, employment type, or office location. Once added, they appear as filter options in engagement reports, helping you tailor your analysis to what matters most for your business.
