> Note: Your organization may have renamed this feature. If you don't see "Objectives" in your navigation, check with your admin for the name used in your account.
This article covers linking an existing key result to a Jira Cloud issue so that 15Five automatically updates the key result's current value as Jira issues change.
Before You Begin
- The Jira Cloud integration must be enabled for your company. See [JQL examples for tracking key results with the Jira Cloud integration] for setup guidance, or ask your Account Admin to configure it. See Configure Jira Cloud for OKRs for setup instructions.
- You must have permission to create and edit objectives. See Role-based permissions for Objectives.
- The objective containing the key result you want to link must already exist. See Create an objective if you need to create one first.
- This feature is available on the Perform, Legacy Focus, and Total Platform pricing packages.
Steps
- Go to Objectives in the left-hand navigation.
- Use the filters at the top of the page to locate the objective you want to update.
- Click the objective name to open its details page.
- Click the Settings gear icon in the top-right corner, then select Edit objective.
- Scroll to the key result you want to link and click Link to… to its right.
- Select Jira Cloud from the dropdown menu.
- In the search field, enter your JQL query to find the Jira issue, epic, or story you want to link.
- Note: For JQL syntax help, see [JQL examples for tracking key results with the Jira Cloud integration].
- Click the Jira issue in the search results to select it.
- Choose whether to continuously link issues:
- Continuously link issues that match search — issues added to or removed from the query are automatically reflected in this key result over time. - Leave unchecked to link only the issues returned at the time of setup.
- Select how the key result should be measured:
- Issue progress — 15Five fills in the current value based on how many matched issues reach the selected completion status. At the top of each hour, 15Five recalculates this value. After selecting this option, the Update key result when issues are in which status? field appears. Select the Jira status (for example, "Done" or "Closed") that marks an issue as complete. The available statuses are those shared in common across all matched tickets. - Total number of issues — 15Five fills in the current value based on the count of Jira issues matching the search. For example, if the search returns 7 issues, the starting value is auto-filled to 7. Set your target value to any number (for example, 3 to reduce the backlog). If continuous linking is enabled, the current value updates each hour as issues are added or removed.
- Click Link the Jira issue(s).
What You Should See
After clicking Link the Jira issue(s), the key result displays a Jira link indicator. The current value field is no longer manually editable and shows the value synced from Jira. The first sync occurs at the top of the next hour.
If Something Goes Wrong
| Issue | Check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The Link to… button does not appear next to a key result | Confirm the Jira Cloud integration is active in your account | Ask your Account Admin to open the Jira Cloud integration page in 15Five and verify the connection status |
| The key result's current value is not editable after linking | The integration may have become disconnected | Ask your Account Admin to open the Jira Cloud integration page and reconnect or re-configure the integration |
| The Update key result when issues are in which status? field shows only one or two options | Only statuses shared across all matched tickets are shown | Narrow your JQL search so all matched tickets share more status options in common |
| Search returns a "Max number of tickets returned" error | The JQL query returns more than 200 results | Refine the JQL query to return 200 or fewer results |
| Key result value does not update after linking | Sync runs hourly at the top of the hour | Wait until the next hour, or ask your Account Admin to trigger a manual sync on the Jira Cloud Integration page |
