eNPS (Employee Net Promoter Score) measures how likely employees are to recommend their organization as a place to work, expressed as a single numeric score.
Key Rules
- Respondents answer one required question: "On a scale from 0–10, how likely are you to recommend [Organization] as a great place to work?"
- Responses sort into three categories:
- Promoters — scored 9 or 10; highly satisfied and likely to recommend - Passives — scored 7 or 8; satisfied but unlikely to actively recommend - Detractors — scored 0–6; unlikely to recommend and at elevated attrition risk
- The formula is: eNPS = % Promoters − % Detractors
- Passives are excluded from the calculation
- Scores range from −100 to 100
- Per Great Place to Work benchmarks: 10–30 is good; 30 or above is excellent
Example: 55% Promoters, 20% Detractors → eNPS = 55 − 20 = 35 (excellent)
Common Misunderstanding
Passives are not ignored — they count toward the total respondent base used to calculate the percentages of Promoters and Detractors, even though their scores do not directly appear in the formula.
