Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) โ“

Why is it important to analyze turnover data?
  • Turnover metrics are valuable from a legal perspective because they can uncover unconscious bias and discriminatory practices, or reveal a workplace climate that deters people that belong to specific demographics (e.g. women or persons of color) from remaining at the company.
  • Cost savings. Estimates of the cost of turnover vary, but commonly it's estimated to be around 33% of an individualโ€™s salary. When you add in all of the indirect costs of turnover, like lost business opportunity, training new employees, or lower productivity of newly hired employees in the beginning, others estimate the cost of turnover to be one-and-a-half to two times an individual's annual salary.
How is turnover calculated in 15Five?

You can report on turnover using the HR Outcomes Dashboard. Within this dashboard, turnover is calculated by the number of employees with a termination date in the past 30 days out of the average number of active users during the selected date range x 100 (expressed as a percentage).

Turnover-Formula.png

In the future, recording termination data will enable you to report on your organization's regrettable turnover. Regrettable turnover occurs when somebody's departure from the company harms the organization, or when a high-performing employee that the company would have liked to keep decides to leave of their own accord. These are usually high-performing or high-potential individuals whose loss can have a significant impact on team dynamics, productivity, and business outcomes.

How can I see a person's termination date in 15Five?

Once imported, you can view a person's termination date in their profile by following these steps:

  1. Click on the Settings gear in the top, right-hand corner of 15Five.

  2. Select 'People' from the dropdown menu.

What are some examples of how I can use turnover data to impact outcomes?
  • Analyze results and take action to prevent turnover. Use the "Performance and turnover" data insight on the HR Outcomes Dashboard to view a trend of people who have left your organization over time and their performance designations at the time of their departure. If you notice a trend in high performers leaving, consider creating an Action Plan to retain top performers.
  • Use engagement surveys for more actionable insights. You can also dig further into engagement survey drivers to see if there were specific criteria, like belonging, communication, or trust in leadership, on teams with higher turnover rates.
  • Educate managers. According to Gallup poor management can be the root cause of 75 percent of voluntary turnover. Use the Manager Effectiveness Indicator (MEI) dashboard to analyze which managers and hierarchies have higher turnover rates, and focus on educating and coaching high-turnover leaders.
