Admins can change which individuals are assigned to write upward reviews for a specific participant in an active or upcoming review cycle. When complete, the updated authors appear under Upward review on the participant's Edit Individual Settings page.
Note: Your organization may have renamed this feature. If you don't see Reviews in your navigation, check with your admin for the name used in your account.
Before You Begin
- You must have the Review Admin role. Managers and employees cannot access the Edit Individual Settings page.
- The review cycle must include upward reviews. See Review types in a performance review cycle to confirm your cycle configuration.
Steps
Note: A participant can have more than one upward review author per cycle if they are assigned multiple managers through Edit Individual Settings. The following people cannot be selected as upward review authors: the participant's own manager, anyone already nominated as a peer reviewer for that participant, anyone already assigned as an upward review author for another participant in this cycle, and anyone globally excluded from review cycles.
- Go to Reviews in the left-hand navigation.
- Click the name of the review cycle you want to edit.
- Search for the participant whose upward reviewers you want to change.
- Click ... to the right of the participant's name.
- Click Edit individual settings.
- Click Edit next to Upward review.
- Select the individuals who will write upward reviews for this participant.
- Click Save.
What to Expect After Saving
The selected individuals appear under Upward review on the participant's Edit Individual Settings page. They will be asked to complete an upward review of this participant.
If Something Goes Wrong
| Issue | Check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A person does not appear in the upward reviewer dropdown | Confirm they are not already a peer reviewer for this participant | Remove the peer nomination first, then return to this step. See Approve, deny, or remove peer nominations for a participant. |
| A person does not appear in the upward reviewer dropdown | Confirm they are not the participant's assigned direct manager | Select a different individual; the direct manager is excluded by design. |
| A person does not appear in the upward reviewer dropdown | Confirm they are not already assigned as an upward review author for another participant in this cycle | Reassign the other participant's upward reviewer first, then return to this step. |
| Edit link does not appear next to Upward review | Confirm the cycle includes upward reviews | Check cycle configuration. See Review types in a performance review cycle. |
| Changes do not save | Confirm your role is Review Admin | Contact your 15Five account owner to verify your permissions. |
