This article covers how to set an objective's visibility to private so only specific people can view it. Complete the steps in Create an objective before following this article.
> Note: The ability to create private objectives can be enabled or disabled in Objectives settings. If the private visibility option does not appear, contact an Account Admin to enable it.
Before You Begin
- The objective must exist or be in progress. See Create an objective to create one first.
- You must have permission to create or edit objectives. See Role-based permissions for Objectives if you are unsure.
Steps
- Go to Objectives in the left-hand navigation.
- Click Create a new objective and complete all required fields through the Dates section.
- See Create an objective for instructions on each field.
- Locate the Who can view this objective? section.
- Select Specific-people.
- Type and select the name of each person who should have view access.
- Click Create objective.
What to Expect After Saving
The objective detail page displays a lock icon and lists the names of permitted viewers in the visibility section. Only those individuals — plus your direct manager and any global objective viewers — can see the objective.
If Something Goes Wrong
| Issue | Check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Specific-people" option does not appear | Confirm private objectives are enabled in Objectives settings | Ask an Account Admin to enable the private objectives setting. See Objectives settings overview (Admin). |
| A person you added cannot see the objective | Confirm the person was saved in the viewer list on the objective detail page | Open the objective, click Edit, re-add the person under Specific-people, and click Save. |
| Direct manager cannot be removed from viewer list | This is expected system behavior | Direct managers always retain view access to objectives. See . |
| Objective saves as public despite selecting "Specific-people" | Confirm you clicked Create objective after selecting the visibility option | Reopen the objective, select Specific-people, re-add viewers, and click Save. |
Not Covered Here
This article does not cover editing an existing public objective to make it private, or configuring admin-level Objectives permissions. See Objectives settings overview (Admin) for admin configuration.
