This article covers how to assign custom weights to Key Results while creating a new objective. When complete, each Key Result row displays its assigned weight badge and the Save button activates only when the total equals 100%.
Before You Begin
- You must have permission to create objectives. See Who can see objectives in 15Five? (Visibility and permissions) for role requirements.
- To adjust weights on an objective that already exists, see .
Steps
- Go to Objectives in the left-hand navigation.
- Click Create a new objective.
- Configure the objective and add Key Results.
- As you add Key Results, weights distribute equally across all Key Results automatically. Three Key Results each display 33.3%; four each display 25%.
- To accept equal weighting, continue creating the objective and skip to step 9.
- To set custom weights, click the Weight: __% badge on any Key Result.
- Alternatively, click the Edit key results weights link at the bottom of the Key Results list.
- In the Edit weights modal, type the desired percentage for each Key Result.
- The running total updates as you type. - If the total exceeds or falls below 100%, see Fix weight distribution errors in the Edit Weights modal.
- Confirm the running total displays 100%.
- Click Save.
- Complete remaining objective fields and save the objective.
If Something Goes Wrong
| Issue | Check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Save button remains disabled | Confirm the running total in the modal equals exactly 100% | Adjust individual weights, or use Remove excess / Distribute remaining — see Fix weight distribution errors in the Edit Weights modal |
| Closed the modal without saving | Previous weights are still active; unsaved changes are discarded | Reopen the Edit weights modal and re-enter the desired values |
| Weight badge does not appear on a Key Result row | Confirm the Key Result was saved to the objective before opening the modal | Save the objective, then reopen and assign weights |
