Admins and managers use this article to deactivate a single user account in 15Five. When complete, the user's account appears on the Deactivated tab in Manage People and the user loses access to 15Five.
Important: If your organization uses SCIM or an HRIS integration to manage 15Five membership, you must remove employees via SCIM or your HRIS — not from within 15Five. Manual deactivation in this case may be reversed during the next sync. Check Admin > Integrations to confirm whether an active integration exists.
Before You Begin
- Account admins can deactivate any user. Managers can deactivate users within their direct reporting hierarchy only.
- If you need to deactivate multiple users at once, see Bulk deactivate user accounts.
- To understand what happens to user data after deactivation, see What happens to a user's data after their account is deactivated.
Steps
- Go to People in the left-hand navigation.
- Use the search bar or filters to find the user.
- Click the user's name to open their account settings.
- Click Deactivate [Name]'s account in the top-right corner.
- Select a reason for deactivation from the dropdown.
> Note: Selecting a deactivation reason populates turnover data in the HR Outcomes Dashboard.
- Click Deactivate account.
- If the user is a manager, select a person to take over management of their direct reports.
- Confirm the user now appears on the Deactivated tab in Manage People.
If Something Goes Wrong
| Issue | Check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The Deactivate account button does not appear | Confirm your role — managers can only deactivate users in their direct hierarchy | Ask an account admin to complete the deactivation |
| The user is reactivated after manual deactivation | Check Admin > Integrations for an active SCIM or HRIS integration | Remove the user via your HRIS or SCIM provider instead of from within 15Five |
| The deactivation reason dropdown is missing | Confirm the user's account is not already deactivated | Navigate to the Deactivated tab to verify current status |
| The user still appears in the active user list after deactivation | Refresh the page | If the user still appears, contact 15Five Support |
