1-on-1s — Feature Overview

1-on-1s is a structured meeting feature in 15Five that helps managers and employees prepare agendas, track action items, and maintain continuity across recurring conversations.

Available in: Perform, Legacy Focus, and Total Platform packages. Roles: All roles.

Feature Structure

1-on-1s consists of three primary surfaces:

  • 1-on-1 agenda — A shared workspace where both participants add talking points, take notes, and assign action items before and during a meeting. Items in the Private notes section are visible only to the person who added them.
  • Talking point bank — A curated library of suggested talking points organized by topic (coaching, career trajectory, remote work, and more). Participants can pull items directly into their agenda.
  • Actions — Action items created during a 1-on-1 are tracked in 15Five's Actions system for follow-up between meetings.

Roles and Visibility

Role Description
Participant A person who participates in a 1-on-1. Can create, schedule, and end 1-on-1s and use the 1-on-1 agenda.
Global viewer Can see 1-on-1 agendas for all users in the company. This role is enabled by contacting 15Five Support — account admins must request it.

Only the two participants in a 1-on-1 can see the agenda unless global viewers have been configured for your organization. Both participants can see all sections except the other person's Private notes.

Common Issues

Key Rules

  • Account admin settings control whether participants can hold 1-on-1s with anyone in the organization or only with their manager and direct reports.
  • Private notes are never visible to the other participant in a 1-on-1.
  • Global viewer access is not self-service — an account admin must contact 15Five Support to enable it.
  • Attachments can be added to talking points or action items. Each attachment can be up to 50 MB.
  • The Copy link to 1-on-1 option generates a static link that always resolves to the current agenda. Pasting this link into a recurring calendar invite ensures both participants land on the correct agenda at meeting time.
  • Items added from Check-ins appear in the Talking points section of the 1-on-1 agenda. Managers can also add items from direct reports' Check-ins while reviewing them.
  • The Slack integration allows participants to add talking points and end 1-on-1s from Slack. The Google Calendar integration allows scheduling directly from 15Five. Both integrations require admin enablement.

Tips for Effective 1-on-1s

Add a static link to your calendar invite. Use the Copy link to 1-on-1 option on your My 1-on-1s page or on any agenda. Paste the link into a recurring calendar invite — it always directs both participants to their current agenda.

Set a recurring cadence. Use to have 15Five auto-create, schedule, and end 1-on-1s. Options include weekly, every two weeks, monthly, or every other month.

Collaborate on the agenda. Both participants can add talking points and action items. The agenda updates in real time for both people, and drafts are saved automatically.

Add context inline. Add a comment to a talking point or action item to capture discussion context alongside the item itself.

Use text enhancements. Within talking points, action items, and shared notes, participants can bold or italicize text, add hyperlinks, create bulleted or numbered lists, and attach files up to 50 MB using the paperclip icon.
