Analyze PMA Results Using Answer Distribution, Compare Groups, and Trends Over Time

The PMA Question Details page contains three sub-reports for analyzing individual Private Manager Assessment questions. Each report surfaces a different view: distribution of responses, comparison across groups, or change over time.

Before You Begin

  • You must be on the PMA Question Details page. To get there, open a review cycle's results, scroll to the Private Manager Assessment Results section, click the three dots next to a question, and select View all answers.
  • To use Trends Over Time across all participants, you must be a review admin or cycle collaborator for every selected cycle.

Steps

Answer Distribution

Use Answer Distribution to see how responses are spread across participants and examine individual results.

  1. On the Question Details page, select the Answer Distribution tab.
  2. Use the Groups filter to focus on a specific hierarchy or department.
  3. Use the Review cycles filter to select one or more cycles.
  4. Use the Answer filter to isolate a specific response option.
  5. Review the bar chart to see the percentage of employees who received each response.
  6. Click any answer segment in the bar chart to filter the Individuals table to that response.
  7. Review the Individuals table — each row shows participant name, review writer, answer received, and submission date.

Compare Groups

Use Compare Groups to break down responses across manager teams, hierarchies, or group types.

  1. On the Question Details page, select the Compare Groups tab.
  2. Use the Groups filter to focus on a specific hierarchy or department.
  3. Use the Review cycles filter to select one or more cycles.
  4. Use the Answer filter to isolate a specific response option.
  5. Use the View by filter to group results by Manager, Hierarchy, or Group type.
  6. Use the Sort by filter to sort results alphabetically or by positivity of responses.
  7. Review the bar chart — each bar shows the percentage of a group that received each answer option.
  8. Hover over any color segment to see the exact count of people who received that response.
  9. Review the Individuals table to see each participant's name and how their manager answered the question.
  10. Click any column header in the Individuals table to sort results.

Trends Over Time

Use Trends Over Time to track how responses to a question shift across multiple review cycles.

  1. On the Question Details page, select the Trends Over Time tab.
  2. Use the Review cycles filter to select two or more cycles to compare.
  3. Use the Groups filter to focus on a specific hierarchy or department.
  4. Use the Answer filter to isolate a specific response option.
  5. Review the line chart — each point represents one review cycle.
  6. Hover over any point on the line to see the full answer distribution for that cycle.
  7. Review the Individuals table to see each participant and the answer they received per cycle.
  8. If a participant was reviewed in multiple cycles, they appear once per cycle in the table.
  9. Click any column header in the Individuals table to sort results.

If Something Goes Wrong

Issue Check Fix
Trends Over Time shows incomplete data Confirm you are a review admin or cycle collaborator for all selected cycles Contact a review admin to grant collaborator access to missing cycles
Individuals table is empty after clicking a bar chart segment An incompatible Answer filter may already be active Clear the Answer filter, then click the chart segment again
A participant appears more than once in the Individuals table The participant was reviewed in multiple selected cycles This is expected — each row represents one cycle's response
Compare Groups chart shows no data The View by filter may not match any existing group structure Switch the View by filter to Manager or Hierarchy and confirm groups exist
