Use this article to post a comment on a Check-in that only specific people can see. When complete, the posted comment displays a private label identifying the intended recipient.
Before You Begin
- You must have access to Check-ins. Contact your admin if Check-ins are not visible in your navigation.
Steps
- Click Check-ins in the left navigation.
- Click the Everyone's Check-ins tab.
- Click the name of the person whose Check-in you want to comment on.
- Click the dialog bubble icon next to the Check-in item you want to comment on.
- Check the Private comment to... box.
- Use the dropdown to select the recipient: the Check-in owner, their manager, or higher-ups in the reporting hierarchy.
> Note: You can select only one recipient per private comment.
- Type your comment.
- Click Post comment.
The posted comment displays a note confirming it is private between you and the selected recipient. The recipient receives an in-app notification, email, and Slack notification (if Slack is enabled) with a direct link to the Check-in.
If Something Goes Wrong
| Issue | Check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Private comment to... checkbox is not visible | Confirm you clicked the dialog bubble icon on a specific Check-in item, not a section header | Click the dialog bubble icon directly next to an individual Check-in item |
| Dropdown shows no recipient options | Confirm the Check-in owner has a manager assigned in 15Five | Contact your admin to verify the reporting hierarchy is configured |
| Recipient did not receive a notification | Confirm the recipient has not disabled Check-in notifications in their account settings | Ask the recipient to check their notification preferences, or contact your admin |
Key Rules
- A private comment is visible only to you and the one recipient you select.
- If you do not mark a comment as private, it is public — anyone with permission to view that Check-in can see it.
- Each private comment can have only one recipient.
